Rehearsal & Recording Studio

About the studio

Woodriver’s studio consists of three purpose-built rooms. The live tracking room is 52m2 and can host an entire band rehearsal or live band recording with ease. Due to its size, it gives a larger-than-life sound to recordings without any loss of clarity. It also provides a comfortable space to rehearse, write or record in. If you’re after more of a dry sound, we have our isolated vocal booth that is a silent space for those softer elements.

Mixing Room

The Mixing room is equipped with high end audio gear from a variety of manufacturers including Empirical Labs, Heritage Audio, Stam and others. It contains multiple couches and is a great HQ to set up in whilst recording, mixing and brainstorming. It’s the central station in the whole process and no detail or sound is missed while listening in this room with every detail being put on display.

Equipment

With a wide range of equipment including studio amps, drumkits, speaker cabs and instruments available during sessions, a plethora of tone options are at your fingertips.

Joe Andersons in Woodriver Studios Recording room

Meet our head engineer Joe

Joe is our recording, mixing and mastering engineer here at Woodriver. Through his decade plus of experience recording as well as an Adv Diploma in Music Production, he has developed an ear for pulling apart sounds and building them back up so that every little layer or instrument works together instead of fighting for space. Joe works using a hybrid of digital and analogue to achieve the final product.

Joe enjoys a wide variety of music and takes elements from many genres in order to deliver a unique and balanced ear for whatever project he is working on. Joe’s focus is often on more heavy genres but has a broad interest in music as a whole.

Capturing the best sound at the source is the most important part and is the foundation to a good recording, so Joe will often suggest experimenting with different amplifiers and cabs, swapping out snares, toms and cymbals and refining the tuning of the kit until the sound is at it’s very best. Then comes microphone choice and ensuring all elements are in phase and placed correctly and then its on to the fun part, recording the songs you have worked so hard to write!

Joe currently plays in Newcastle local band’s Ill Natured and SUCC.

Joe is always eager to take on projects of any shape and size. From a simple single to an album epic, nothing is too big, too small or too weird.

What People Are Saying

“The guys at Woodriver are absolute professionals and fantastic guys. The studio itself offers a wide range of top quality gear, spaces, and services as well. You’ll go in not knowing them and come out feeling like you’ve known them for years, all while making top quality music in the process, highly recommend, easily one of Newcastle’s finest studio spaces!”

— Phillip Hanlon (The City)

“It was our first time in the new Woodriver studio space, and I was super excited to get set up and hear it all in action. The Live Room is huge, so we had ample room to set up our equipment and lighting etc.

The recording session was a total blast and sounded amazing right out of the gates.

Joe, Liam and Isaac were fantastic to work with, as always. They all share a deep passion for music and that shines through in every way that they approach their work, how they communicate and make you feel in their studio.

In my experience, these are the factors that really make a great studio session. These guys have it in spades and I can’t wait until we can get back there to work with Joe, Liam & Isaac in the future.”

— Jamie Hay (Post Truth)

“My band regularly rehearses at Woodriver and has recorded multiple albums with Joe Andersons and I would highly recommend both him and the studio. It's a great space with very talented and welcoming owners.”
